Grace

“I should be trying on dresses right now,” I say. “Not that this place isn't beautiful.”

The palm trees sway in the breeze. Edgar keeps his eyes on the road as we curve around another bridge that connects two shallow inlets. I know he's listening, but he's not saying a word.

I thought about having a destination wedding some place like this. It's still in the running of possibilities, as idyllic as it is, but the longer I spend here, the more problems I'm recognizing. Do I really want sand in everything? Do I really want to be reminded of this contest, especially if we don't end up winning?

The end of springtime is hot enough. If we're looking at a summer date, anywhere like this would be an absolute scorcher. Then again, having it in Aurora doesn't really seem grand enough for the likes of Edgar Desjardins, the billionaire mogul.

I pull the stockings up on my thighs. Edgar definitely notices. He loves these white ones the best. Whenever I'm in them, he can't take his eyes away.

“Tell me something,” I say.

Edgar nods. “I'll do my best.”

“Why are we here?”

He takes a breath. “This again, Grace. Really?”

“I just don't understand,” I say. “You can fuck me anytime you want. I thought we got what we both needed out of the contest.”

He pulls up beside the pavilion and stops the car. He kills the engine and looks at me. “I want to finish what I've started.”

I reach over and put my hand under his on his thigh. “There is no finishing it. We're just starting something. We have a lot to plan for. A celebration.”

“We still have a lot to do before we can start planning that,” he says. “We have to finish this, then there's the business trip to Cebu and—”

“There will always be something to get in the way. We have to carve a space out for us,” I say. “Unless...”

Edgar turns his hand over and squeezes mine. “No. Don't even think that. I have no regrets at all. You've been... I love you.”

“I love you too.” I smile. It's always amazing to hear him say that to me. Yet, I feel something left unsaid. I can't let it go. I never can. “What is it?”

A cloud moves through Edgar's face. He's obviously crestfallen. I can read him too well, but not perfectly yet. I only know something is wrong, but I don't know what.

Edgar lets his head fall back to the head rest. He looks up at the roof of the car. “It's not the contest. Not even you.”

“What, then?” I ask.

He eyes the ring on my finger, gleaming brightly. The engagement ring.

“It's the wedding,” I say. “How could that not be about me?”

He squeezes my hand even tighter. “It's hard not to think about the last time I was there.”

“With Nora,” I say. “I thought we were past this. She's gone. I'm here.”

Edgar shakes his head slightly. “It's not like that. It's never going to be like that. I can't just move on.
